Interoception

Interoception is the body's ability to sense and interpret internal physiological signals.

These signals may include:

  • Heartbeat

  • Breathing

  • Hunger

  • Thirst

  • Temperature

  • Muscle tension

  • Fatigue

  • Emotional activation

  • Internal bodily sensations

Interoception helps create awareness of what is occurring inside the body.


Why Interoception Matters

Before we can respond intentionally to an experience, we often need to recognize it.

Interoception contributes to our ability to notice:

  • Stress

  • Calm

  • Activation

  • Fatigue

  • Discomfort

  • Ease

  • Emotional shifts

Without awareness of these signals, it becomes more difficult to regulate ourselves effectively.


Interoception and FIA

Within FIA, Interoception is not the same thing as Visceral Awareness. Instead, Interoception helps explain part of what makes Visceral Awareness possible.
